Krita comes with many methods of selecting parts of your canvas in order to edit them. Once you make a selection you will only be able to affect the canvas area inside of that selection.
Lets first examine the methods we have available to make a selection.
This command, accessed from the menu or by pressing Ctrl + A, will select everything in the current active layer. Ctrl + A is used only to select everything. It does not toggle selection.
This command, accessed from the menu or by pressing Ctrl + Shift + A, will deselect everything.
