Translation Kubuntu

Jump to: navigation, search

Hello All

I am one of Kubuntu translator in launchpad. I have installed Kubuntu lately the 11.10 but when I change the language I see missing translations. Let me start from Kontact I have another Linux machine which shows every thing translated and working fine but in Kubuntu half of the translation is missed

The other thing I want is when you click on K (start) button on bottom left hand corner a window opens with different menus for example from top Games, Graphics, Internet, Multimedia, Office, Settings, System, Utilities, Lost & found, Help and their drop down for example when the curser is on Libre Office a window will open giving you a choice LibreOffice, LibreOffice Calc, LibreOffice Draw, Libre Office Impress, LibreOffice Writer where could I find this files please tell me the name of the file which holds this things. And system settings and inside Dolphin Desktop, Documents, Download, Music, Picture, Public, Templates, Video please tell me where I could find those files.I would like to translate those things.

Thanks Samson

  1. Translation was always unwanted child in Ubuntu family. The major languages are supported well enough, but the rest of the languages... Please report bug on LP about language pack. But I doubt there will be any useful reaction. By the way, are the problems you mentioned about menu items. If so, the cause can be that Kubuntu team stopped using desktop files from LP and did not tell anything to ubuntu-translators. So the translations of desktop POs from LP just wasted.
  2. You can use Discover_Lancelot to obtain the results you wanted.

Hi,

It is almost impossible to help you in appropriate way without at least one example of what is untranslated (screenshot will be much appreciated).

Thanks.

It is hard to read something on the screenshots, but guessing from the Kickoff and System Settings main page I can tell that these items cannot be translated via Launchpad (see [08:32]).

The only way to translate them is KDE upstream.

  1. It's KWin. Can be translated via kwin.po in KDE upstream or on LP (but please note that after 12.04 all KDE translations will be in Universe, untranslatable through LP now).
  2. Kickoff menu. KDE items are loaded from .desktop files. Translation for LibreOffice components probably do not load due to Ubuntu integration problems (please consult on #ubuntu-translators IRC).
  3. System Settings module names. Cannot be translated through LP. Should be translated upstream of directly via .desktop files.

KOffice developers decided to split further development.

Thomas Zander (KWord developer) and two or three new developers wanted to develop absolutely free from any sponsorship suite. This should be new KOffice: KWord (text processor), KCells (spreadsheet) and Kivio (flowchart management). Now it is almost dead (at least no new commits apart from bug fixing, no release plan.

Most of the former KOffice developers (maintainers of Karbon14, KWord, KSpread, Krita, Kivio, and KPlato) have found new project — Calligra. It consists of Karbon (vector graphics), Krita (painting), Sheets (spreadsheets), Words (text processor), Flow (flowcharts), and Plan (project management). These project dynamically grow and attracts new developers.

Kubuntu team decided to switch to Calligra, but forgot to inform ubuntu-translators. Then failed to import translations, then move KOffice translations on LP into trash can. Oops... It's Kubuntu (they even f*cked up all documentation translations for their release).

So, in short. No, you cannot translate KOffice on LP. But you can port your translation to Calligra in no time with Lokalize synchronization features.

But please be aware: Kubuntu 12.10 and any later version WILL NOT BE TRANSLATED VIA LP AT ALL!!! Send your translations upstream!
