I had difficulty following the instructions in this page. I am using Kopete 1.0.0 under KDE 4.4. Has the interface changed?

I have tried to get Kopete developers involved, but it seems that they are simply not around. I managed to contact the one developer who has done recent work on the video aspect, but that's all. Consequently I have a whole bunch of Kopete pages ready (from my point of view) for release, but no way of knowing how accurate they are against the KDE 4 version). I released only the pages that I have been led to believe are correct for the most part. That's the best I can do. The rest of the pages are in limbo, waiting for someone who knows more about the subject than I do to tell me what is OK and what isn't.

I'm not a big IM user, so it's not easy for me to make judgements.

I know next to nothing about IM myself. I was unable to follow some of the instructions on the page, but that might be caused by a problem with the account that I registered in the process. I guess we'll just have to wait until someone experienced with Kopete steps in.

Having a gmail account, I just said I wanted a googletalk account (jabber), gave my username and password, and was in. I suspect that those instructions are only needed in exceptional circumstances now. Did you try to sign up with one of the lesser known providers? It would help if we could even get some confirmation from other users as to what does and doesn't work. I'll see whether I can get any info from mailing lists.

Since googletalk supports jabber much of the information on this page may be obsolete. I tried the link to xmmp.net mentioned here, but couldn't connect (the error message indicated server problems, but it has lasted for four days now - maybe the link is broken?)

Then I followed the link to the wikipedia page, found a server and got an account. I don't know if it works, but at any rate the interface that I worked with in Kopete seemed to differ a bit from what is described here.

It would be very helpful to get feedback from a user, who has actually used jabber transports. Should we put an info box on the page warning that the information may be outdated and asking for help?

Good idea. I'll do that
