Krita: Getting Started

Chapter 1: Installing Krita

Krita can be obtained as a part of Calligra Suite. Being a cross-platform application, it can be installed on various distribution of GNU/Linux (like Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSUSE), FreeBSD, Windows and Mac OSX. Each system has different procedure to complete Krita installation.

On some systems (like Ubuntu), you need to install Karbon together with Krita to enable vector graphics support. If you are not using KDE as your workspace, you may want to install KDE Plasma workplace to enable full customization of toolbars.

GNU/Linux

Ubuntu (12.04 LTS and above)

Krita has become available in Ubuntu repository since Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. There are two ways of installing Krita in Ubuntu: Using Ubuntu Software Center or Terminal. Optionally, you can install Karbon together with Krita to enable vector graphics support. If you are not using KDE as your workspace, you may want to install KDE Plasma workplace to enable full customization of toolbars.

Using Ubuntu Software Center

  1. Open Ubuntu Software Center
  2. Input “krita” in the search bar
  3. Select Krita and click install (multiple Krita may be shown, but they are all the same )
  4. (Optional) Input “karbon” in the search bar
  5. (Optional) Select karbon (Vector graphics application for the Calligra Office Suite) and click install
  6. (Optional) Input “kde-plasma-desktop” in the search bar
  7. (Optional) Select “KDE Plasma Desktop and minimal set of applications” and click install (If not shown, click “Show technical item” at the bottom of this window)

Using Terminal

Open terminal and execute the following command:

sudo apt-get install krita

(Optional) Enabling vector graphics support:

sudo apt-get install karbon

(Optional) Enabling fully customizable toolbars:

sudo apt-get install kde-plasma-desktop

Windows

KO GmbH has released a Windows installer. Please go to the Download Page

Known Issues (Krita version 2.4.x)

The Windows version is currently in its early stage of development, it's highly experimental and thus not recommended for production usage. There are a few issues you should be aware of before installation:

  • Some features might be missing.
  • Slowdowns might occur while using certain tools.
  • Some tablets cannot be recognized.
  • Windows 7 taskbar issue after installation, difficulties while pining/unpining items.
  • Windows 7 start menu slowdown while listing all programs.

Mac OSX

Mean while, there is only preliminary support for Mac OSX. You may want to build your own binaries of Krita.
