This option is available from Project Menu. However, most of the time it appears to be greyed out. I only find is non-grey on a clip that has just been added to the Project Tree.
This option is available from Project Menu for audio and image files. It is greyed out for video clips. It opens the clip in an external editor.

And if I select the Edit Clip menu item on Video clips nothing appears to happen.
Selecting Edit Clip on audio clips causes the Audio Editing software specified in Settings Menu>Configure Kdenlive>Environment  Default Apps - Audio Editing to open the Audio clip ready for editing.

However, selecting Edit Clip on audio clips causes the Audio Editing software Audacity to Open. So my guess is edit clip will cause the clip to open in what ever application is some how set up (in some settings some where) to be the "editor" for this file type.
Selecting Edit Clip on Image clips causes the Image editing software specified in Settings Menu>Configure Kdenlive>Environment  Default Apps - Image Editing to open the image file ready for editing.

The option is not available for Video clips because Kdenlive is the video editor - only Audio and Image clips are edited by external software.

Edit Clip

This option is available from Project Menu for audio and image files. It is greyed out for video clips. It opens the clip in an external editor.

Selecting Edit Clip on audio clips causes the Audio Editing software specified in Settings Menu>Configure Kdenlive>Environment Default Apps - Audio Editing to open the Audio clip ready for editing.
