La fenêtre principale est la fenêtre qui apparaît lorsque '''KMail''' est ouvert. Elle est divisée en trois volets par défaut:

Ce volet contient la liste de vos dossiers de messages (les autres programmes d'e-mail l'appellent parfois "boîte aux lettres"). Pour sélectionner un dossier, cliquer simplement dessus. Les messages contenus dans le dossier apparaîtront désormais dans le volet En-têtes. La liste des dossiers peut être affichée à la fois dans une vue courte, qui n'occupe qu'une petite partie du côté gauche de l'écran, et dans une vue longue, qui occupe tout le côté gauche de l'écran mais peut afficher plus de boîtes aux lettres. Vous pouvez basculer entre ces deux vues sous <menuchoice>Apparence → Disposition</menuchoice> dans la boîte de dialogue <menuchoice>Paramètres → Configurer KMail...</menuchoice>. La section supérieure du volet des dossiers contient des liens rapides vers vos dossiers favoris. Ajoutez des dossiers ici via le menu contextuel du bouton droit de la souris <menuchoice>Ajouter aux dossiers favoris</menuchoice>. Ce volet répertorie les informations d'en-tête (indicateurs d'état des messages, expéditeur, objet, date et autres colonnes facultatives telles que taille, indicateur de pièce jointe, indicateur important, etc.) pour les messages du dossier actuellement sélectionné. Cliquer sur un en-tête sélectionnera ce message et l'affichera dans le volet Message ; vous pouvez également sélectionner plusieurs messages en maintenant la touche <keycap>Ctrl</keycap> enfoncée lorsque vous cliquez sur les messages. Modifiez l'affichage de votre liste de messages en sélectionnant <menuchoice>Affichage → Liste de messages → Thème</menuchoice>. Vous avez plusieurs options ici.

*<menuchoice>Configurer...</menuchoice> - Vous permet de personnaliser votre propre thème pour le liste des messages, par exemple en ajoutant ou en supprimant des colonnnes dans la barre de tri cliquable.

This pane displays the currently selected message. Below you will find options to adjust the reader window to your preference.
The top of the reader window contains various header options. Go to <menuchoice>View → Headers</menuchoice> and try them out until you find one you like! Details for the various headers are as follows:

*<menuchoice>Enterprise Headers</menuchoice> - A minimal header with title, From, and To, with a graphical design.

*<menuchoice>Fancy Headers</menuchoice> - Minimal header with a spam status notification.

*<menuchoice>Brief Headers</menuchoice> - Title, and in parentheses you will find From and the date.

*<menuchoice>Standard Headers</menuchoice> - Title, From, and To.

*<menuchoice>Long Headers</menuchoice> - Title, Date, From, and To.

*<menuchoice>All Headers</menuchoice> - List everything you ever wanted to know about the email, including every server it went through, virus/spam scanners it went through, etc.

*<menuchoice>Custom Headers</menuchoice> - See [[Special:myLanguage/Kmail/Configure Appearance#Configure Appearance Message Headers|Configure Appearance Message Headers]]  to set up custom headers that can be selected here.

If you prefer to view your email in HTML format instead of plain text (Default), click on the bar located on the left hand side of the pane. The text on the bar will inform you which view you are in. If this bar is missing you can enable it in the <menuchoice>Settings → Configure KMail...</menuchoice> dialog, from there you want the <menuchoice>Appearance → Message Window</menuchoice> tab, and select <menuchoice>Show HTML status bar</menuchoice>.

If you would like to change how your attachments appear in your messages, go to <menuchoice>View → Attachments</menuchoice>. Your options are as follows:

*<menuchoice>As Icons</menuchoice>, all attachments appear as icons at the bottom of the message.

*<menuchoice>Smart</menuchoice> will show attachments as icons, unless the message suggests that they should be displayed inline. You can suggest that certain attachments should be shown inline in your own messages when you select <menuchoice>Suggest automatic display</menuchoice> in the attachment's properties dialog.

*<menuchoice>Inline</menuchoice> shows the contents of the attachments at the bottom of the message. Attachments that cannot be displayed, e.g. compressed files, will still be shown as an icon.

*<menuchoice>Masquer</menuchoice> n'affichera pas  les pièces jointes.

For complex messages you can show the structure of the message by selecting <menuchoice>View → Show Message Structure</menuchoice>, this will show in the message structure viewer below the preview pane.

You can scroll through the message page-by-page using the <keycap>Page Up</keycap> and <keycap>Page Down</keycap> keys, or line-by-line using the <keycap>Up</keycap> arrow and <keycap>Down</keycap> arrow keys; you can also use [[Special:myLanguage/Kmail/Keyboard Shortcuts|Keyboard Shortcuts]] to skip through your messages without having to use the mouse.
