Krita is an application for the creating images. You can best compare it to Corel Painter, but there are similaries to Adobe Photoshop or Gimp as well -- but there are differences). What Krita is can best be described by our vision:

Krita is a KDE program for sketching and painting, offering an end–to–end solution for creating digital painting files from scratch by masters.

Fields of painting that Krita explicitly supports are concept art, creation of comics and textures for rendering.

Modelled on existing real-world painting materials and workflows, Krita supports creative working by getting out of the way and with snappy response.

Of course, Krita has many advanced features, like a large selection of color models to work in, support for 8, 16 and 32 bit channel depths, the ability to import and export many types of image files, various cool and experimental brush engines, assisted painting, scripting, filters, layer groups -- it's no use summing up everything here, just look at the table of contents of this manual! Above all, though, Krita is meant to be a lot of fun. Fun to use, fun to experiment with and also fun to hack on.

The Krita project was started in 1998 and has since then been worked on by dozens of volunteer programmers. Check out the about box! Every day Krita becomes a little bit better.
