Hi Carl

I really like the new look - nice and crisp.

We shall need to go through our templates and see which needs updating - I noticed, that the PrevNext2 template that produces a triple of links to the previous, then next and the index page in the Amarok manual (among others) now creates a list of these three links. See fx this page at the bottom.

I also notices a small glitch in the translation tool. On a page of translatable messages, sometimes the Edit link does not appear flush right and the text of the link is trunkated. See fx this page EDIT: The link doesn't work. To see the example, change language to danish, go to LanguageStats and click Akregator in the list.

Apart from the visual update, are you also updating the wiki software? Our installation is quite outdated by now.

I could not log in to the sandbox wiki using my usual login name, so I created a new one, Claus.

Thanks for all your work. Let me know it there is anything I can do.

Could you give me edit rights, please, so that I can experiment a bit and make my observations more precise.

A couple more observations:

Sections starting with a colon (:) are no longer indented (see fx the list under the heading Relevance)

Spacing between bulleted items and images has changed. Previoulsy, the image was immediately below the previous item without extra spacing, and there was a big space between the image and the next item (too big imho). This behaviour has reversed: now the image is adjoined to the following item without spacing, and there is spacing between the image and the previous item. This is actually worse, because when the last line of the previous item is short the space appears way too big. See the license badges in the section First Things First.

Some of our info boxes have lost their colored background. This is the case for the Attention and Warning Templates as well as the Construction template (the latter may be caused by the former).

Section titles have become smaller and stand out less.

The phabricator task you linked to seems to be the wrong one - it has to do with the docs.kde.org page.

I just noticed, that the <menuchoice> markup has disappeared (examples in the bottom section of Tasks and Tools). This is most likely also affecting similar markup like <keycap>.

I am excited to hear that we are getting an update of the wiki software. We have some long standing problems that we have not been able to do anything about because of our dated installation.

I came across another formatting glitch just now: In tables with a column of heading cells, the horizontal line between cells is missing (see the Jargon File for an example). Also background of heading cells is no longer shaded (I guess this is less of a problem).

Thanks, do you know if there is some document/page listing all the issues? I can confirm that this solves some issues I encountered (new image are not displayed because the old one is still cached and Stats didn't work), but if you know of others technical issues, that I didn't know about, I'm interested ;).

I also fixed the tables glitch ;)

Nice work about the Stats - that was one of the issues on my list.

At some point the specialised searching templates (see User:Claus chr/Search and User:Claus chr/DPL) stopped working - they have been tweeked to work again, but the DPL extension that we use is very old and has been superseeded by DynamicPageLoad 3 (which requires a newer version of the wiki software).

The WhatLinksHere tool in the right margin does not work reliably.

Perhaps my biggest issue is with the translate extension. Sometimes pages that needs updating fails to show in the Special:LanguageStats page. There are other glitches in the translate system, but hopefully they will all be resolved when that extension is updated.

\o/ The new theme is live! Great work.

There is somethings strange going on with the translation pages: When I go to Special:LanguageStats and middle-click on a page with untranslated units to open it in a new tab, the new page shows no translation units. I have to reload the page in order to see the units. The problem does not ocur, when I just click the link to open the page in the original tab.

The same problem occurs when all the units of a page have been translated: We used to have a couple of links at the top of translation pages where one could choose to see all translatable units or only the ones that need work. These links are missing now.

Hi Claus,

I fixed the first problem. This was caused by a missing JQuery plugin: https://github.com/cowboy/jquery-throttle-debounce/ 10 year old but still working ;)

I don't understand the second problem, I can see the links in my browser. Maybe this was fixed by fixing another bug or you mean other links.

The problem still exists, but I was wrong in saying that it happens in certain cases; it seems to occur randomly. Sometimes, when I go to a translation page it will look like this:

While the page look like this I can't get to any translation unit whether it has been translated already or not. I have to reload the page to get this:

In and of itself this is not a big problem, but until you hit on the idea to reload the page it may make translators think that the translation system is broken.

The good thing is that a long standing problem with the translate system seems to have been solved. Pages that had been modified did not show up as modified in the translate system, but they do now!

Translator account

Hello Claus, I tried to translate a paragraph on the page https://userbase.kde.org/Akregator into German. But somehow my changes are not saved. I saw that the translation GUI has changed since the last time I did translations. I guess I'm missing something. Best Regards, Sordon

Hi Sordon,

sorry, due to the massive spam amount we were fighting with we disabled the writeapi on mediawiki for normal users. Unfortunately this is needed for the translate extension to work, and it was also disabled for translators, due to inheritance rules of the access list. This has been fixed, the translator group explicitely got writeapi rights.

I adressed this to Yurchor because they seemed to have marked our pages for translation, but Timothee Giet told me you are the main translation admin.

userbase kde kubuntu

Hi,

I would like to start translating for the Kubuntu Userbase department.

For now, at least. How do I get started? I think I need an account with the privileges and then everything goes by itself.

I am just wondering now though ... at this point.. whether subpages would need translation first, prior to the initial index for that site (https://userbase.kde.org/Kubuntu). It also appears as though you are Dutch :p.

Hi Bart,

Yes, you need translators priviliges. I'll be happy to grant you those priviliges, but I need you to add your name and a few other details on this page: Translator_Account.

Translation is easy once you have the required rights: just click on the link above the languages box; that takes you to the translation page. You can translate any content (once it has been marked up for translation) in any order you wish. And when you are done with the Kubuntu stuff, you might enjoy translating some of the KDE stuff :-).

Btw. if I appear to be Dutch it is probably because the translation software has confused some of my admin work for proper translations. I am in fact Danish.

How to handle structural differences between translations?

Hello,

I just noticed a problem while editing this page. I say there "As soon as similar projects exist for countries connected to this language they will be listed here." and sure we will do that but how is that going to happen technically?

Assume there will be four links for the English page (due to the many countries speaking English and the national limitation of the projects), one for the French version, none for most of the others. There are no problems if this is done as text but that would be strange, wouldn't it? Does the translation tool allow lists or tables with different lengths in the language versions? Do we need some kind of dummy structure in the English one?

Technically it is not a problem having list or tables of different lengths in translated pages. It works this way: The English page is split in translation units by blank lines. Each unit may be replaced by any content by the translator, even by no content at all.

On the other hand, if you want to have content on the German page for which there is no similar English content you would need to create an empty unit. It should be possible to do this by placing a comment surrounded by blank lines at the appropriate position in the English page.

New Team Leader facility

With today's update of the Translate extension, we have two new options in the "I want to" combibox -

Review all translated messages in... and Accept translations in.

These should be useful when you are checking on the work of new and relatively unknown translators. They are only available to translation Team Leaders, at least for now.

Yes, it was an accident. I have no idea how it happened - my best guess is that it was somehow inadvertently pasted there, but I have no recollection of using that phrase anywhere recently. Anyway, I have removed it.

Uploading po files

You now have perms to upload your own translations. When you have finished a translation, or finished a translation session, open Special Pages -> Wiki data and tools -> Import translations and point it to your .po file. Let us know if you meet any problems.

We are close to moving UserBase to the new Chihuahua theme. There are some big advantages with Chihuahua, not the least being the ability to adapt to screen space, both large screens and small, hand-held ones. Much of the work I've been doing lately has been to prepare pages for the switch. As always, with something new, there are likely to be issues that we are not aware of until it is in more general use, so I'm approaching all who have made significant contribution in the last seven days, asking for help.

I'd like you to change your User Preferences to use Chihuahua, as soon as possible. The plan at the moment is that if at the end of this week we have no show-stopper issues we will make Chihuahua the default theme for UserBase, probably next weekend.

There is a public Etherpad at http://webteam.notes.kde.jefferai.org/14? - please add any notes, comments, issues there. It's also helpful if you say "Hi" in the chat window, because that ties a comment colour to your name, so I know who to approach if more discussion is needed.

Changing categories to match translated pages, using /da

Claus, I started work yesterday on updating the category language lists to the new format, so that new translators won't get off on the wrong foot. I'm aware that it will outdate existing translated pages, so as soon as I've finished updating those lists I'll pick up the Category pages to get lists of pages using the older format, and make the change to the new one. I don't want to create too much work for everyone else. Hope that's OK for you.

No problem, it didn't take too long. In the process I noticed, that the Gluon page has no category. I would have added one, but was not quite sure how: when making a new section in an existing page, should I leave out the unit number tag and let the translation system generate it, or does this only work when marking up a new page?

Translation of User:Hans/HowTo

Hi,

Regarding the page User:Hans/HowTo. We (annew and me) marked it as translatable yesterday because I wanted to play with the new translate system before the BoF tomorrow at Akademy. We didn't realize it would show up anywhere since it's a user page, and as mentioned it was only intended as a playground.

The changes have been reverted now, and I apologize for any extra work this has meant for you.
