Phonon je multimediální systém používaný Amarokem. Byl vytvořen, aby KDE 4 umožnil nezávislost na multimediální systémech, jako jsou GStreamer nebo VLC, a aby poskytl stabilní API po dobu života KDE 4. Přidaným bonusem je, že zjednodušuje vývoj tím, že poskytuje jednoduché API, které pracuje na různých platformách, jako jsou Windows a OS X.
