To cut a clip, the easiest way is to place the timeline cursor where you want to cut the clip, then select the clip (left click in it) and use the menu <menuchoice>Timeline -> Current Clip -> Cut Clip</menuchoice> (default shortcut: <keycap>Shift + R</keycap>).
