Phonon-GStreamer : GStreamer est une bibliothèque multimedia provenant du projet GNOME. Phonon-GStreamer est actuellement le moteur dorsal recommandé pour Kubuntu, et est en fort développement.
Phonon-VLC : VLC est un lecteur multimédia multi-plateforme populaire. Il est également en développement actif, et intègre beaucoup de travail venant à la fois des développeurs VLC et Phonon.
Phonon-Xine : Autrefois le moteur dorsal le plus populaire pour Phonon; désormais non maintenu et désué.
Phonon-DS9 : C'est le moteur dorsal natif pour Microsoft Windows utilisant DirectShow 9.
Phonon-QT7 : C'est le moteur dorsal natif pour Mac OS X, utilisant QuickTime 7.
Phonon-MPlayer : C'était la tierce partie du moteur dorsal pour Phonon, désormais non maintenu.
