O ICQ é um programa de mensagens instantâneas proprietário, que foi desenvolvido inicialmente pela companhia israelita Mirabilis. Ele usa o protocolo de rede OSCAR da AOL para enviar as mensagens de texto. Para identificar as pessoas, ele usa um número chamado UIN (Unified Identification Number - Número de Identificação Unificado). Se você registrar uma conta no ICQ, precisa também indicar um endereço de e-mail. Alguns clientes ICQ suportam a autenticação com esse endereço de e-mail, em vez do seu UIN (mas não o Kopete).
