ICQ è un programma di messaggistica istantanea proprietario inizialmente sviluppato dall'azienda israeliana Mirabilis. Usa il protocollo di rete OSCAR di AOL per inviare i messaggi di testo. Per identificare le persone utilizza un numero chiamato UIN (Unified Identification Number). Se registri un account ICQ devi anche inserire un indirizzo di posta elettronica. Alcuni client ICQ supportano l'accesso con quel indirizzo di posta invece che con il tuo UIN (non Kopete).
