Installation Instructions

If you need help to install KPhotoAlbum, look at this tutorial about how to install KDE software.

New features arrive in stable only after possible bugs have been removed.
Using this version you may find bugs. If so, please report them.

Using this version you will find bugs. Please report them.

Explore

Explore KPhotoAlbum by the documentation or the demo-mode.

Documentation

Several types of documentation exist:

Demo-mode

Demo-mode loads a number of already annotated stock images for you to browse and view, or to annotate yourself. All KPhotoAlbum functionalities are working. When in demo-mode shutting down KPhotoAlbum will allow you to retain or discard any changes you've made.

Starting KPhotoAlbum for the first time, it will offer to run in demo-mode.
Other ways to start the demo-mode:

  • In KPhotoAlbum click Help, then Run KPhotoAlbum demo
  • Start KPhotoAlbum with the --demo switch on the commandline.

Note

If you choose to explore KPhotoAlbum using your own images, KPhotoAlbum will ask for the folder containing your images. Please note that KPhotoAlbum currently supports only one root folder: it will find the images in this folder and any sub-folders it may contain.
See FAQ for more information.

Backstory

In 2003 Jesper Pedersen[1] started working on KimDaBa (K image Data Base) as a personal project. KimDaBa was renamed to KPhotoAlbum.

KPhotoAlbum version 2 in 2004 added the KDE Image Plugin Interface (KiPi[2])[3]. In 2006, Tuomas Suutari a sponsored [google summer of code student], implemented a new sql based database.

In July 2007, KPhotoAlbum started to being ported to KDE 4[4]. The porting finished in May 2009[5]

In 2016, KPhotoAlbum was ported to qt5/kf5[6].

In 2024, KPhotoAlbum was ported to qt6/kf6[7].

Stable releases are always announced on our news page.

KPhotoAlbum supports all the normal image and video formats including raw formats produced by most digital cameras and scanners (using dcraw to do the decoding). It is also possible to use the thumbnails embedded in raw images (that are usually of decent size and quality) for fast viewing so there is no need to decode the whole raw image.

Extending KPhotoAlbum

  • Patches and features awaiting approval or implementation - Please use bugs.kde.org for that.
  • Some useful scripts are shipped with KPhotoAlbum in the contrib directory.
