O objetivo desta página é fornecer uma referência de caráter não técnico junto com ligações para maiores informações ou demonstrações. Veja também Jargon File.
Atividades
- Atividades são conjuntos de elementos gráficos do Plasma que têm o seu próprio fundo de tela. Um pouco como Desktops Virtuais, mas não exatamente.
- Por exemplo, você pode estar inicialmente em uma "atividade de trabalho", com leitores de rss, uma nota com a lista de coisas para fazer, uma "Vista de Pasta" com os arquivos relacionados com o seu trabalho e um fundo de tela discreto.
- A seguir, você pode estar em sua "atividade de tempo livre", com pré-visualização das fotos da família e cães, leitores de rss dos seus blogs favoritos, uma Vista de Pasta que mostra a sua colecção de filmes, uma mini-aplicação para Twitter e claro, aquele fundo de tela do Iron Maiden que você adora desde o início dos anos 80.
- Às 17 horas em ponto você muda da sua "atividade de trabalho" para a sua "atividade de tempo livre".

Akonadi
- The data storage access mechanism for all PIM (Personal Information Manager) data in KDE. This allows various applications to access the required information in one place. Note that use of Akonadi does not change data storage formats (vcard, iCalendar, mbox, maildir etc.) - it just provides a new way of accessing and updating the data.
- Os principais motivos para desenhar e desenvolver Akonadi são de caráter técnico, como por exemplo ter uma maneira única de acessar os dados PIM (contatos, calendários, e-mails, etc) a partir de diferentes aplicações (kmail, kword, etc), eliminando assim a necessidade de escrever código similar aqui e ali.
- Outro objetivo é impedir que aplicações com interface gráfica como kmail tenham acesso direto a recursos externos como servidores de correio eletrônico - isto era uma das razões principais dos relatórios de falhas no que diz respeito ao desempenho/capacidade de resposta, no passado.

Áreas de trabalho virtuais
- Um conceito popular dos gerenciadores de janelas de Unix é o uso de áreas de trabalho virtuais. Isto significa que você tem não uma, mas várias telas para colocar as suas janelas. Quando você muda para uma área de trabalho diferente (normalmente com um paginador) só verá as janelas que abriu nessa nova tela ou o que moveu para lá. Uma janela também pode ser definida como "pegajosa" aparecendo em todas as áreas de trabalho virtuais.

- Do dicionário de inglês da Collins, temos que (em uma tradução para o português) widget é "qualquer pequeno mecanismo ou dispositivo cujo nome é desconhecido ou esquecido temporariamente". Nos termos do KDE, um widget é um componente independente na tela. Também conhecido por "miniaplicativo" ou "gadget". X Server
